No, I am not going back to America. Better yet, I am beyond joy to announce that I am returning to my real home: Beijing Foreign Studies University! Because there was uncertainty about my full recovery from spinal surgery (of which I will write more later), I am returning only part-time this semester to continue my passion, perhaps my most important life-time achievement, the further establishment of a lasting Drama Program at BFSU. There are many people to thank for this opportunity to prove that my health and stamina are up to the task. But there are two that I must and want so much to recognize here: Chair of the School of English and International Studies (SEIS) Professor Sun Youzhong, and Vice Dean Jin Limin, head of the Department of English within the SEIS, with whom together we created the Drama Program at Beiwai some two years ago.
I will continue teaching a very full load of Drama and Communications classes at Peking University Health Science Center for this semester, and commute daily to Beiwai to serve a great school and extraordinary students who share my passion for theatre.
Forgive my absence from these pages, and the many un-returned e-mails, but the doctors still wish that I not sit for more than a short time for awhile yet. I will report this wondrous fact briefly: X-rays recently revealed 100% fusion of my spine, perfection! Two thin layers of bone from the "Chinese Bone Bank," two Titanium steel rods and a lot of screws, did the "impossible." For the first time since I was 32 years-old, I have a strong, healthy spine, thanks to a great surgeon, Dr. Liu Zhongjun, who pretty much worked a miracle early last June.
But more on that later. Right now, I just want you to know that I am going home, to BFSU, gradually at first, but home nonetheless!
